Job Summary

The Office of Residential Life provides important opportunities for students to live and learn together through the creation of intentional and inclusive communities. The office works closely with 300+ student leaders to identify campus needs, build strong and cohesive communities and develop relevant and timely student-centered programming. This work results in residential communities where all Bowdoin students are encouraged, both directly and indirectly, to engage actively in their academic and co-curricular experiences and to take responsibility for themselves, for others, and for their community. First year buildings, College Houses and upperclass residence halls provide opportunities for students to grow through constant contact with new experiences and different ways of viewing the world. These residential communities promote the intellectual and personal growth of individuals and encourage mutual understanding and respect. Approximately 200 students live in Bowdoin’s College Houses. These spaces are intentional and inclusive living communities that are regularly referred to as the “living rooms of campus” due to the range of social and academic programs that take place within these eight buildings. This unique living situation provides the opportunity for students to be active participants in creating the campus culture that they want to be a part of. An intensive selection process, comprehensive training, budgetary responsibilities and the opportunity to program collaboratively with faculty, staff and students make the College Houses a space where many students on campus want to live and learn.

The A/A Director of Residential Programs will take the lead in supporting the development of the College Houses as vibrant programming spaces and will work closely with the 24 House officers and the 200 members to achieve this goal. They will also be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating programs aimed at building community within residential spaces. This will include, but is not limited to: working with students living in the College Houses in creating innovative programs and events that serve the campus community; supporting all programmatic efforts by Residential Life student staff and members of the Peer Support Network; developing a system for tracking all residential life programs; evaluating all residential life programs to assess their effectiveness; creating a newsletter aimed at shining the light on the work of the residential life office; monitoring all College House and residential life program budgets; and independently and collaboratively working on projects that promote the work of the Office of Residential Life. This position will be responsible for contributing to the office goals of creating inclusive communities in all residential spaces, identifying and meeting Bowdoin community needs through student-initiated programs and creating curriculum that develops highly effective teams among residential life student staff and College House officers and members.

Education/Skills Requirements

BA required, Master’s in education or other related field preferred. Applicants must have at least two years of professional experience and must possess excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to set and balance multiple priorities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in educational, co-curricular and extra-curricular programming and will have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The ability to thrive in a dynamic student-centered environment is key. Experience building inclusive communities, supporting student-centered programming and developing leadership skills among a diverse body of students is an important part of this position.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Previous residential life, Fraternity and Sorority, or other experience developing and supporting student-centered and initiated programming is preferred. A valid driver’s license is preferred. The successful candidate will work well with students, faculty, parents and other members of the campus community, and have a demonstrated ability to complete projects both independently and in collaboration with a team. Experience effectively communicating, and facilitating communication, across difference. Experience designing innovative co-curricular and extracurricular programs are a strong plus.

Standard Work Days and Hours

8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday with evening and weekend work required during the academic year. Participate in the Student Affairs on-call rotation and respond to emergency and crisis situations as necessary.
